Spotlight On: Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec

Brothers, Ronan (b.1971) and Erwan Bouroullec (b.1976) worked together for over 15 years. Their distinct personalities and approach to creativity resulted in a unique bond. Based from their studio in Paris, the design duo developed many furniture and lighting projects together with an experimental approach, before parting ways to work on solo projects in January this year.

They collaborated with some of the most prestigious design houses in the world, including Issey Miyake, Vitra, Flos, Kartell and Iittala. Their designs traverse the fields of industrial design, architecture and craftsmanship. Their designs can be found in the permanent collections of the Pompidou Centre, the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Design Museum in London, among others.

CÉRAMIQUE

The Céramique Lamp collection is the pure expression of material and form. Marrying a bold geometric silhouette with the tactile nature of pottery, Céramique crosses the boundaries between sculpture and lighting. Shop the Flos collection.

PLOUM

The Ploum Sofa, designed for Ligne Roset in 2011 is an exercise in comfort and combines two materials: stretch-fabric upholstery and ultra-flexible resilient foam. The shape and proportions were studied to allow the whole body to recline in many different positions within the sofa’s cocoon-like silhouette, with a supple, quilted surface.

DRAWING

Combining their love of illustration and graphic design, the brothers published the book “Drawing” in 2013, under the art direction of Cornel Windlin. JRP Ringier published the comprehensive book that brings together more than 850 drawings made by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec between 2005 and 2012.

LUCE ORIZZONTALE

Luce Orizzontale, designed for Flos, combines exquisite craftsmanship with contemporary lighting. Born from an ambitious bespoke project, this ultra-modern suspension light marries the notions of artisanal with technology. Its interlocking elements of tubular glass are created with a process of pouring the glass into a rotating mould, creating a unique surface texture on each individual piece. Its modular structure can be scaled up via 8, 10 or 12 inter-connecting tubes.

AIM SUSPENSION LIGHT

Aim, designed for Flos, is a playful and minimal lighting system that places the light source and the cables at the core of the design. Multiple pendants combined together make an impressive statement light feature in any contemporary interior.
